Friendship – its nature’s approach to healing

There’s a lot to be said for sitting down with a cup of tea and a long chat with your best friend. Friendships offer us a sense of belonging, support and companionship. They can endure across your life span. And, friendships are excellent for your health and wellbeing.

Research shows that friendships can afford a level of protection against mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. It is said that a problem shared is a problem halved. That’s true when we consider that friendship impacts the way we respond to stress. Don’t we all feel better when we have that vexing problem off our chest? In a study conducted in the United States, blood pressure reactivity was lower when people shared a problem with a supportive friend.

One of the best ways to calm your nervous system and relieve your stress is to talk face to face with a friend who is supportive, a good listener and a sounding board. Your friend may also help to distract you from your problems.

Remember, it’s not a one way street. Good friends are there for each other during tough times. Giving back to those who have supported us and cared for our wellbeing is important. Give back when you are able.
